I had the privilege of living in San Francisco for the past four years and it wasn’t lost on me how lucky I was to be surrounded by fresh, in-season produce year round! Now I’m in Minnesota and am so dang grateful for my flourishing garden… even if I can’t keep up with the abundance of veggies!

If you’re wondering how the heck to eat more veggies, let me introduce you to my favorite dip: Greek Yogurt Tzatziki Dip.  It’s the perfect appetizer for your next dinner party or after school/work snacking. The recipe is so simple you’ll wonder why you’ve never made a homemade tzatziki sauce recipe before.

What is Tzatziki?

Tzatziki (sometimes spelled tzaziki) is a creamy yogurt sauce made with cucumber and garlic. It is very common in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. While it is commonly used as a sauce or dip, I like pairing it with a variety of meals! I’ll share ideas below.

Ingredients in Tzatziki Dip

  • Greek Yogurt – either full fat yogurt or fat free yogurt will work. Just make sure it’s plain! I’ve also had success with dairy-free yogurt if you want to make a vegan dip.
  • Cucumber – Use a fresh English cucumber. No need to remove the skin. Grate your cucumber using a box grater.
  • Garlic – fresh cloves garlic is best in this tzaziki recipe.
  • Lemon juice – I recommend using freshly squeezed lemon juice as opposed to juice from a container!
  • Fresh dill – I love the flavor pop fresh dill adds to this dip. You could also substitute other fresh herbs like fresh mint or parsley.
  • A dish towel for removing liquid from cucumber

How to Make Tzatziki Dip

STEP 1: STRAIN CUCUMBER

Place grated cucumber into a clean dish towel and squeeze out any excess moisture.

STEP 2: MIX DIP

In a large bowl, add the yogurt, cucumber, garlic clove, lemon and fresh dill. Stir to combine. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cover the bowl and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes (or overnight!) to allow the flavors to combine.

Why do you need to strain the cucumber?

As much as I wish you could skip this step, straining the cucumber makes all the difference when it comes to this tzatziki dip recipe.

Cucumbers are mainly made up of water and if you don’t strain the water out, all of this water will leave you with a watery dip recipe. That’s also why we use greek yogurt in this easy tzaztiki recipe! Greek yogurt has more straining than regular yogurt to remove the water content so it leaves you with a thick greek yogurt dip which is better for dipping veggies.

How to Store Tzatziki Dip

Your tzaziki will store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. It typically gets better the longer it sits so it’s a great thing to meal prep on a Sunday and eat all week!

How to Eat Tzaziki

I honestly could eat this dip in a million different ways. Here are some ideas:

  • With veggies – treat it as a good ol’ veggie dip for fresh veggies or drizzle over roasted or grilled veggies.
  • With pita chips or warm pita breads – I love dipping my homemade pita chips in this dip for a crunchy snack.
  • On gyros – the perfect sauce pairing for my Greek chicken gyros!
  • In a bowl – this sauce would be delicious in my baked falafel bowl.
  • On lamb burgers – Tzaziki tastes delicious on fresh lamb burgers.
