One of the new additions to our garden this summer was lavender. When we lived in California we had lavender growing in our yard which was incredible but here in Minnesota a perennial lavender simply wouldn’t survive. But we took a chance planting some annual lavender and it’s doing really well! I’ve been harvesting and drying it to be used in lavender spray and even some edible lavender.
I have so much of it that I now officially have lavender spray in every room. When I was spraying it on my daughter’s pillow before bed she asked me what I was doing. I explained to her that it was a lavender sleep spray to help her get a nice restful sleep. I let her smell the bottle and she gave me an immediate yawn! Not exactly scientific research but it clearly worked on her.
This lavender pillow spray is so easy to make with just 3 or 4 simple ingredients. Let’s get into it…
What is Lavender Spray?
So what is Lavender Room Spray? It is essentially an aromatherapy spray that uses lavender essential oil (+ dried lavender leaves if desired!) to keep your house smelling fresh and encourage a restful sleep. The smell of lavender has been shown to improve sleep quality and waking feeling refreshed (source). This lavender spray can be used as a pillow spray, room spray or body spray.
Ingredients Needed
- Witch Hazel – This is used because it helps to combine the water and essential oil. Otherwise the essential oils will degrade over time and the scent won’t keep. Ideally you’ll want to use a pure witch hazel like this one.
- Distilled Water – Ideally use distilled water since it tends to keep longer.
- Lavender Essential Oil – Use pure lavender essential oil. Add more or less to desired scent preference (roughly 20 drops).
- Optional: Dried Lavender – I have lots of dried lavender from our garden so I like adding it for visual effect and added lavender goodness. But this is entirely optional.

Spray directly onto pillows and linens for the most effective spray. This room spray clings best to fabric so that’s how you’ll get the best results. That being said, you can spray it directly on your body/clothes or simply in your room.
You can technically replace witch hazel with rubbing alcohol or high proof vodka. I prefer it with witch hazel but you can use what you have.
No! I like adding it for visual effect but the scent addition is minimal. You’ll get plenty of lavender from the lavender essential oils alone.
Storage Instructions
Your lavender spray will keep for up to 6 months. It may last longer but I find the scent begins to dissipate after several months.

- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Category: Home
- Fill bottle(s) halfway with witch hazel.
- Fill remainder of bottle(s) almost to the top with distilled water (leave a little room for essential oils).
- Add in 15-30 drops of lavender essential oil. Start with 15 and add more to desired scent level. Shake well.
- Add in 1-2 lavender sprigs if desired.
- Store in a cool, dry location for up to 6 months.
