Maven’s Quick Tips
Use what you have. One thing that makes green goddess salad so great is that it can be easily customized to your liking. Prefer kale to cabbage? No problem! Have romaine on hand? Use that instead. The dressing can also be customized based on which herbs you have on hand.
Make in advance. Unlike most salads this green goddess salad recipe can easily be prepped in advance and can sit in your fridge for 2-3 days before serving. Perfect for meal prep or preparing for a dinner party.
Get in your greens. A great way to get in your veggies! For an extra dose of green stir in some cubed or mashed avocado.
This salad is all the rage on TikTok these days but if you’re an OG you know it’s been around for a while. Years ago I shared my go-to green goddess salad dressing which is the perfect dressing recipe when you have extra herbs laying around.
I gave suggestions for how to use it but I realize that some people want a bit more direction when it comes to these kinds of recipes.
Thanks to Baked by Melissa and TikTok Green Goddess Salad has made a major comeback and in a big.green.way. Bring on the cabbage! Bring on the cucumber! Don’t forget the green onions! So if you’re also craving a little green goddess goodness then look no further than my version.
Ingredients in Green Goddess Salad
- Cabbage – 1 head of finely shredded Napa cabbage (my preference) or green cabbage. Feel free to use a mandolin if you have one.
- Green Onion – a large handful which is roughly 6 green onions.
- Cucumber – 1 large English cucumber or 2 medium Persian cucumbers.
- Chives – I like to use these in the salad and in the dressing but feel free to just use in the dressing, if desired.
Ingredients in Green Goddess Dressing
- Plain greek yogurt – I prefer greek but you can use any plain yogurt
- Herbs of choice – cilantro, basil, mint, parsley, tarragon, chives, green onions, dill etc…
- Garlic – use fresh garlic! It tastes so much better.
- Salt and black pepper
- Jalapeno – optional but I love the spicy kick!
My personal favorite combination is cilantro, basil and dill but honestly any combination will do. Use whatever you have on hand!
Make it Vegan!
If you’d like a vegan green goddess recipe feel free to substitute Greek yogurt with 1 large avocado + 1/4 cup water.

Add-Ons + Swaps
For a protein boost add on some grilled chicken, crispy bacon or for a vegetarian option these crispy chickpeas would be delicious!
Replace cabbage with other hearty green. If you don’t have or don’t like cabbage I recommend subbing in another heartier green like shredded kale, thinly sliced brussel sprouts or finely chopped romaine lettuce.
Add fennel. I love adding fennel for a little oomph. I thinly slice it and throw it right in. You might need to add a little extra dressing.
Give it a kick. My green goddess dressing uses jalapeno in it but you can adjust the spiciness to your liking by adding more or less seeds.
FAQs
Any salad tossed in a green goddess dressing is considered green goddess salad. My version features cabbage, green onions, cucumber and chives but you can customize to your liking. Green goddess dressing is typically a base of either mayo or yogurt (my preference is for yogurt), fresh garlic, blended together with mixed herbs. I add jalapeno for a kick and if you want a touch of zest feel free to add a squeeze of lemon!
Absolutely! Feel free to double or even triple the recipe, if desired. This makes a great healthy addition to any dinner party or potluck!
For sure. Feel free to prep the salad and dressing up to 3 days in advance.
See above! You’re welcome to sub in a different green into your green goddess salad.

Storage Instructions
Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. In fact, I find this green goddess salad tastes even better the longer it sits. The heartiness of the cabbage allows the dressing to really soak in and it gets more delicious over time.
