Getaway

My parents came for a visit last week and offered to watch the boys while Thomas and I went on a little getaway. We had Staunton in mind, and booked a stay at the Historic Inn at Oakdene. Oakdene was recently renovated by my friend Jamie’s short term rental company, Be Still Getaways, who hosted our stay. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in the greater Charlottesville/Waynesboro/Afton/Staunton area, they have so many lovely properties, from inns to full houses. Oakdene is one of the newest! Here’s a recap of our stay.

Trip to Staunton

We left Charlottesville midday on Saturday and arrived in Staunton and easy 40 minutes later. While I went to Staunton for a yoga class a few weeks ago, I hadn’t been for a true visit since I was 38 weeks pregnant with Mazen! It’s such a charming quiet town. Thomas kept commenting on how peaceful it felt compared to the “hustle and bustle of Cville” (which I know will make you city folks chuckle).

The Historic Inn at Oakdene

We arrived at Oakdene and checked into our room. The inn was built for the former Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 1893. It’s Queen Anne style was dramatic in the best way – especially at night!

The grounds and gardens were so gorgeous. They reminded me of my grandmother’s house!

Queen Anne Style

The inside, while historic, was also totally modern for comfortable accommodations. Oakdene doesn’t have an innkeeper, and rooms are accessed with codes. There are 8 suites, all with beautiful bedding and private baths. Check out the shower in the governor’s suite! And there are really lovely common areas, including a grand piano, coffee and snack lounge, and billards room! We commented how fun it would be be to come and stay with a few other couples.

Stocked gelato fridge!

The Queen Anne Suite

Our room was just offer the main hallway and was so nice and spacious. We were both obsessed with the Cozy Earth bedding and might have to get some for our home.

Game Time

After settling into our room and changing for dinner, we went to the porch for happy hour and a round of Rummikub

We didn’t realize how close were to downtown until we mapped it – we could walk! Love a walkable spot, and it was a pretty one too.

Once we reached downtown Staunton, we went into Zynodoa for drinks before our 7pm dinner reservation.

A nice old fashioned for me!

Once our reservation time came, we moved to the outdoor patio. I love that Staunton has its own version of a downtown mall with lots of outdoor seating and no traffic. We shared a caesar salad to start along with a warm salty baguette.

Our dinner was SO good. We both normally gravitate towards seafood, but we ended up getting beef and pork. Zynodoa features local meats. My beef was from Burner’s Beef in Luray, VA and Thomas’s pork was from Autumn Olive Farm in Waynesboro.

Those grits were the best thing about our meal! We also had two really good red wines to go with.

We walked back to Oakdene to enjoy gelato and the season 7 Outlander finale!

Coffee things:

Breakfast

After coffee, we walked back downtown and went to The By&By for bagel sandwiches. Funny once we sat down in this courtyard, I recognized it from my trip almost 12 years ago where we’d had drinks.

10/10 breakfast bagel! Sausage, egg, and cheese.

I highly recommend both Oakdene and Staunton for a peaceful getaway! We would definitely go back. If you’re interested, you can book here
