Syracuse police make arrest after series of racist incidents on universitys campus

An arrest was made in connection with new graffiti found on Syracuse University’s campus, police said Thursday.

While police in Syracuse, New York, did not immediately release details surrounding the arrest or describe the graffiti, school officials said it was related to markings discovered Wednesday in and around the Irving Garage and Bird Library.

The announcement of an arrest follows a tumultuous day at the private university, which has been roiled by at least 12 racist and bias-related episodes since Nov. 6. Those have also included a swastika drawn in a snowbank near an apartment complex where students live and the alleged sharing of a white supremacist manifesto on Monday at a school library.

The school’s Department of Public Safety is also investigating four other bias incidents: Two of which occurred at a residence hall where graffiti was found featuring derogatory language toward African Americans, a third that happened at a residence hall and involved “anti-Native American language,” and a fourth that took place at an art facility and included graffiti that used a racist slur toward Asians.

On Wednesday night, dozens of students walked out of a forum attended by the school’s chancellor in the wake of the incidents, demanding he endorse all of their requests for how to handle the crisis on campus or resign.
