For many, the delicate skin around the eyes is where signs of aging and fatigue tend to manifest most prominently. This is where a good eye cream comes into play. They are specially formulated with ingredients that address issues like fine lines, puffiness and dark circles, and hydration needs unique to the delicate eye area. If you’re dealing with these concerns, investing in a well-formulated eye cream might be worth it.
Is Eye Cream Necessary?
It depends. For me, personally, it is a staple in my skincare routine. I had an esthetician tell me that anyone over the age of 25 should be using an eye cream, but it really depends on your skincare goals. It is necessary for me as tired eyes and fines lines and wrinkles have become the new norm as a 40-something mom of two.
You don’t need anything, but if you’re into taking good care of your skin to support it in aging gracefully, an eye cream could be a small but mighty addition to your skincare routine.
Products with powerhouse ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, retinol, and peptides can make a noticeable difference in diminishing the appearance of those pesky crow’s feet or morning puffiness.
For those in their early twenties, the need for an eye cream might be less apparent, as youthful skin tends to be more resilient and naturally produces ample collagen. If that’s you, a solid skincare routine, including sun protection and overall hydration, is probably adequate.
What Is Eye Cream?
Some may argue that an it is just a more expensive face cream in a smaller package; but in actuality, they are formulated specifically for the delicate skin around the eye. They typically contain ingredients that are gentler and less likely to irritate this sensitive skin.
They also contain more oil than regular facial lotion, and often have active ingredients aimed at the common complaints like dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines around the eye area. The skin around the eyes is the thinnest skin on your face (it’s fragile!), and therefore prone to show age and fatigue more easily. Fluid collects under the eyes that can cause puffy eyes and dark circles.
While eye creams are not a miracle for any of these, they are designed to hydrate and brighten the eye area — because everyone wants to look awake and bright-eyed!
Benefits of Eye Cream
Moisturize
To provide hydration to the skin around the eyes, which is thinner and more prone to dry skin. Proper moisturization can help minimize the appearance of fine lines caused by dehydration.
Reduce Puffiness
Ingredients like caffeine or soothing botanical extracts that can help reduce puffiness and under-eye bags. These ingredients work by constricting blood vessels and reducing fluid buildup.
Diminish Dark Circles
Ingredients like vitamin K, retinol, or peptides can help reduce the appearance of dark circles by targeting pigmentation and promoting circulation.
Enhanced Skin Elasticity
Products with peptides and collagen-boosting ingredients can improve skin elasticity and firmness, reducing the sagging that can occur around the eyes with age.
Soothing and Calming
Products with ingredients like chamomile or aloe vera can provide a soothing and calming effect, reducing redness and irritation.
What To Look For In Eye Cream
Here are some key ingredients to look for:
- Hyaluronic Acid: provides intense hydration
- Retinol: effective for reducing fine lines and wrinkles (note do not use in pregnancy)
- Peptides: promote collagen production and firmness
- Antioxidants: protect against environmental damage
- Caffeine: reduces puffiness and improves circulation
- Vitamin C: helps brighten and reduce dark circles
- Ceramides: enhance the skin’s natural barrier
How To Use Eye Cream
Lightly pat around eye area using your ring finger until fully absorbed. Use twice daily, morning and night. It’s recommended to apply after serums and before moisturizers or face oils. Ready my post: How To Apply Skincare Products In The Right Order

To summarize, the necessity of an eye cream is subjective. It’s about understanding your skin’s unique needs and tailoring your skincare approach accordingly. Remember that the foundation of healthy skin lies in consistent care, protection from the sun, and staying hydrated.
